A Stratagem is, “an elaborate or deceitful scheme contrived to deceive or evade.” Sounds like a very non Christian kind of thinking but when applied to truths in spiritual warfare it is very much in keeping with Christ’s teaching that we do not, “give what is Holy to dogs nor cast our pearls before swine.” Matthew 7:6. In WWII the great German Theologian, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, wrestled with this concept. He chose to be an agent for the Allies in trying to defeat the Nazi regime. He loved his nation but he said that the Nazi’s were evil and no longer deserved the truth but must be stopped even if it meant his own life. He did not wish to see his German people or nation hurt or destroyed but at all costs the Nazi regime had to be destroyed.
In another era an ancient Chinese military treatise was written called, “The Art of War” attributed to a high ranking military general, Sun Tzu. Considered the definitive work on military strategy and tactics of its time, it is used even today by both military, business leaders and by the legal community.
General Sun Tzu said in one of the chapters of his book on warfare that a wise conqueror does not come to destroy but to take control. His goal is not to decimate the country but to take authority. If he just devastates that nation or if he besieges its cities, he would destroy the value of what he is trying to conquer.
As Believers we must know that God has called us into a, “spiritual warfare” and as we confuse our enemy, (powers and principalities not flesh and blood) we are called to destroy the works of darkness. Let us apply principles that go totally against the reasoning of man. Romans 12;20 “ If your enemy is hungry feed him, if he is thirsty give him drink. For in so doing you will heap coals of fire upon his head.
God give us the strategy to destroy the works of darkness and liberate those we love without decimating them in the process just to prove that we are right. Through prayer, love and consistent examples of trust Him in our own lives let us bring people under His authority as is described in Romans 12 & 13 that, “every person be under subjection to God”. But to do this we must live pure and Holy Lives and put on the, “whole armor of God”. Eph. 6:10-16.
As we give thanks to God for all He has done for us let us continue to fight this fight of faith. The Word says, “From the days of John the Baptist until now the Kingdom of Heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force “ Mathew 11:12. By applying His love and His weapons of warfare we can truly Go In Peace Go In Love AND… GO IN VICTORY!Pastor Norman Howell / November 2013
