An absolute revolution in television has occurred in the past decade. Not only the proliferation of cable tv but the voracious hunger for programming that has dictated it’s exponential growth. That need for new programming has enabled the so called, “Reality Television” to expand beyond anything the creators of, “Survivor” had ever  foreseen.

Today we can see anything imaginable and some things I don’t think anyone ever foresaw as being viable for people to actually watch. From Duck Dynasty to Storage Wars/ Wife Swap/ Deadliest Catches/My Cat From Hell/ Doomsday Bunkers /Keeping Up With The Kardashians/ CupCake Wars/ Toddlers and Tiaras /Extreme Cheapskates/ Bridezilla’s/ 19 Kids and Counting/ Pawn Stars, Breaking Amish / L.A. Ink / Police Women of Dallas/The Voice/ Dancing With The Stars and on and on and on.

Now before we criticize let’s also remember that within the plethora of Reality Shows there is probably one or two that are your own personal favorites. It has obviously struck a cord and is extremely popular among almost every age group and demographic.

What drives it? I believe there is a God given desire for purpose and meaning for all people and a God given instinct to labor and to be part of something special.

The Bible teaches us that there is, “nothing better for men than that they should be happy in their work, for that is what they are here for, and no one can bring them back to life to enjoy what will be in the future, so let them enjoy it now”. Ecc.3:22 (TLB) Most of us desire to feel useful and see others being useful and achieving and living life to the max. So often the case though in these things that we thought were,” reality” were actually  mere shadows or vapors that disappear just like so many variations of these t v programs. So much can be reduced to vanity as was described by Solomon. The things that last are those that have redemption, have purpose and lasting characteristics. Things that involve giving instead of just taking.

C.T. Studd wrote in his famous poem, “Only one life, twill soon be past, Only what’s done for Christ will last”. 1st Corinthians 3:11-15 shows us that our work will be tested through the fire of life but those things built upon Him will last and never be lost. Build on the Rock!

Today God desires for us to live not just vicariously through others in their perceived or created reality but to be fulfilled in the labor of our heart and our hands and that, HIS Kingdom Come His Will Be Done. God wants to cast YOU in His Truth His Way and His Ultimate Reality Show. So enjoy and live a dynamic and faith filled life in Jesus that is unique and special and has purpose and meaning. The Ultimate Reality.
